Khumbu Everest Region Trekking
A trek to Khumbu, home of the Sherpas and Mont Everest, is an unbeatable Himalayan experience. Three of the world’s ten highest peaks – Mt. Sagarmatha (Everest), Lhotse, and Cho Oyu guard this holy sanctuary of the Himalayan gods. Ornate monasteries bestowed with colorful prayer flags, carved prayer Mani stones, and an, unbending faith in traditional values embrace the Sherpa communities in a fast-changing world. With forty years of tourism, and now electricity and daily helicopter service to Kathmandu, the Sherpas have maintained their dignity and culture admirably.
Whether you trek to Everest Base Camp and its lofty look-out point Kalapattar (5,545m/18,192ft), or visit one of less-trodden side valleys such as Thames, Gokyo, or Chukkung, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of countless Himalayan peaks and the warm hospitality of your Sherpa hosts. On our Lodge Treks, you stay with Sherpa families and take meals around their hearth. The more challenging treks venture beyond where even Sherpas live, necessitating a fully stocked camp set-up and crew.
A trek in Khumbu can be approached in several ways: through Solu’s rolling hills and forests ablaze with spring rhododendrons (Solu Khumbu Trek); over Salpa La from east Nepal, cooled by shady bamboo and banyan groves (Arun to Everest Trek); or flying into Lukla (2,886m/9,400ft) and hiking up the Dudh Kosi (Milk River) to Namche Bazaar, from where a number of treks branch out. You’ll fly by helicopter back to Kathmandu.
Cho-Oyu (8,201) is the 7th highest mountain in the world; “7” being on auspicious number in Tibetan Buddhism. The name Cho-Oyu means “Goddess of Turquoise.”
